Important Tips for your Great Canadian Hike Adventure

From humble strolls to epic adventures, October 1 to 31 is your chance to hike, walk, jog, cycle, paddle and experience The Great Trail of Canada as a participant in the Great Canadian Hike. Find a Signature Hike near you, register your start time (no cost) and get ready to step out there – safely and responsibly.

We’ve put together some suggestions to ensure you get the most out of the Great Canadian Hike!

COVID-19 protocols

Taking place over the entire month of October, on the longest trail network in the world, this is a way for your family and close friends to build a safe adventure together.  Keep two metres (six feet) apart from other trail users, carefully select your hiking group, bring a mask and hand sanitizer, and enjoy! Being active and enjoying the outdoors is important for your physical and mental health.

We are limiting the numbers of registrants per trail, per day to reduce exposure to a large number of hikers. If you would like a quieter hike, please choose early mornings during the week and/or hike on trails farther away from large urban centres. In order to curb the spread of the virus, we do not recommend multi-day trips with overnight stays on the Trail. But don’t worry, you’ll find plenty of inspiration for a future vacation during the Great Canadian Hike!

What to bring

Depending on the length and remoteness of your hike, we suggest a few items you can take in a day pack.

  • Laced footwear with good tread (no flip-flops or open-toed shoes)
  • Waterproof jacket, layered clothing for all conditions
  • Food and water
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug repellent
  • First aid kit
  • Cell phone – more remote locations may not have cellular access

Will there be volunteers, washrooms and first aid at the trailheads?

No, this is an unsupported challenge and you must be self-sufficient. Do not expect washrooms along sections of the Trail. We are not bringing in toilets, hand-washing stations or temporary structures for this challenge. It is an unsupported challenge, and you will need to plan accordingly.

Will my hike be an out-and-back?

Yes, most sections of The Great Trail do not loop back on themselves.
